We have a winding trail of these beautiful flowers that appear in our front yard every spring, peaking out of the earth when the snow is still on the ground! We were inspired by their variety and show of color to the world after the long winter gives way to spring here in northern Michigan.
The cup-shaped, solitary, salverform flower tapers off into a narrow tube. Their colors vary enormously, although lilac, mauve, yellow, and white are predominant. The grass-like, ensiform leaf shows generally a white central stripe along the leaf axis.
Cultivation and harvesting of Crocus Sativus for saffron was first documented in the Mediterranean, notably on the island of Crete. Frescos showing them are found at the Knossos site on Crete. The first crocus seen in the Netherlands, where crocus species are not native, were from corms brought back in the 1560s from Constantinople.
Our Crocus Art Tile is a nominal 5x5 inches and 1/2 inch thick.
We hand paint each tile. The one in images has a pure white Snow Celadon flower outlined in lavender celadon. The leaves are True Celadon (light green) outlined in Dark Green celadon. The background is a placid and ephemeral pale Glacier blue.

Inspired by the glorious beauty of the Grass River Natural Area in Antrim county, and the majestic local landscape, that makes the place we call home amazing.
This mural has all you need to bring the vibe of the outdoors into your living space. The rocks, trees, mud bank, grass, lilly pads, sky, and clouds all meticulously hand-carved and hand-painted by LNS artisans.
The mural is nominal 33x24 and will fit above your stove, perhaps nestled in among our beautiful 3x6 or 3x8 standard size field tile. The tile are approximately 1/2 thick and have unique handcrafted texture and variation.
There are (16) nominal 3x8 tiles surrounding (8) nominal 7x9 tiles, and (2) nominal 1x3 inch tiles, (26) handmade tiles in all.
There are several varieties of glazes on the mural, each bringing depth and character to this custom art piece. We've included transparent, glossy celadons to highlight the handcrafted aesthetic of the tile. We brought in an opaque, Gold metallic glaze on the rocks and tree bark. Matte shinos on the land and rocks add great texture and inspire you to reach out and feel the beauty.

Visit product page →An architect in Maine reached out to me a couple moons ago, with an idea for a custom tile. Her client desired a large format thistle design for her fireplace. I recollect her mentioning the thistle was meant to showcase their ancestry in the design.
The tile’s finished dimensions are near 8 3/4 x 10 1/2 x 5/16 inches.
My tile art is typically 1/2 inch thick (or more), but this tile is only 5/16 inches thick. It fits more of the thickness of a commercially made tile. This tile will not fit with my other handmade tile in thickness.
Look at Blue Rutile glaze, always a show stopper! Rainforest is the amazing blue-green hue on the stem, and large leaves. True Celadon shows its translucent pale green glow on the small leaves. Aqua glaze hue ebbs and flows on the flower bulb. I layered Cherry Blossom and Lavender on the flower petals… for a true thistle vibe.
